CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Bulldog men's swimming and diving team wrapped up competition at the 2009 ECAC Swimming and Diving Championships on Sunday evening with an eighth-place finish. The team, which placed fourth last year at the meet, competed with a limited squad, but still turned in some impressive performances and earned the team 141 points. Navy won the meet with 703.5 points.
The best finish of the day for the team came in the 400-yard freestyle relay, an event that the Bulldogs took ninth in, winning the B finals of the event. The team of junior Jon Taylor, sophomore Zak Murez, freshman Patrick Puhl and senior Dan Li finished in a time of 3:07.39. Their time was actually faster than the eighth place team from Rhode Island.
The next best event for the team was the 200-yard backstroke, with two Bulldogs competing in the B finals of the event. Leading the team was freshman Matt Boone, who took 12th in a time of 1:54.75. Right behind him was sophomore Alex Gornitzky in 16th with a time of 1:55.41.
The only other Bulldog that competed in the finals was freshman Christopher Luu in the 200-yard breaststroke. Luu took 16th in a time of 2:11.31.
Also competing for the Bulldogs in competition on Sunday but not advancing to the A or B finals were freshman Alexander Benz, sophomore Nick Van Nispen and sophomore Jason Choi. The team will be back in action at the Ivy League Championships with a full squad of 20 student-athletes starting on Mar. 5-7.
