Righi Breaks Another Record at EISLs

March 3, 2006

EAST MEADOW, NY - Another day, another record; that was the story for Alex Righi at the EISL Championships today. Righi followed yesterday's Yale record in the 50-yard freestyle by breaking his own record in the 100-yard backstroke. The Bulldogs finished the day up two spots in fifth place with 606 points.

Righi's record second school record in as many days actually came in the heat for the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 47.72. This beats his own record of 48.85 set at the H-Y-P meet in February of this year.

However, Righi swam a slower time in the final, and was beat out to first place by Harvard's David Cromwell. Cromwell's time of 46.99 was a new EISL record. In the consolation final of the 100-yard backstroke, Kieran Locke finished in sixth place in a time of 51.28.

But Righi wasn't the only Yale swimmer to pick up where he had left off. Andrew Foss, who finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle Thursday night, went one better tonight. Foss came fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:38.26, a new personal best.

Perhaps the best team effort came in the 1000-yard freestyle. Yale had five different swimmers score points in the event. Kevin Pudas led the charge, finishing ninth with a time of 9:26.79. Foss was the next to finish for the Bulldogs, coming in at eleventh in 9:27.51. Brendan Everman, Jack Hutchinson and Kent Garber also scored points for Yale.

Yale's other finalist came in the 400-yard individual medley. Freshman Dennen McCloskey finished seventh in a time of 3:59.25.

Another important factor today was that the Bulldogs kept their composure, managing to score points in all events after being disqualified in the 400-yard medley relay Thursday night. This consistency helped the Bulldogs clime to fifth today.

Princeton and Harvard are first and second respectively after two days, while Cornell and Columbia are both ahead of the Bulldogs in the race for third place. The final day of competition begins tomorrow at 11 am at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. Complete Results are available at the Ivy League website.
