Bulldogs Compete In Team Qualifier Competition

Nov. 3, 2003

The full Yale men's and women's swimming teams continued preparation for their upcoming 2003-2004 season at the Team Qualifier inter squad meet that was held Friday, October 31 and Saturday, November 1 in New Haven, The upper-class swimmers joined the efforts of the freshmen, who had made up a majority of the squad at the Bulldogs initial preseason competition at the UCONN Invitational that was held two weekends ago. The competition of 26 individual events, 13 for the men and 13 for the women, offered a full schedule of championship events including the 1000 Freestyle, but excluded the 1650 Freestyle. Points were scored based on how close this early in the season the swimmers were able to perform to the current Yale School Records in their respective events.

Each swimmer competed in 4 events and the competition offered a unique opportunity for the swimmers to not only compete against their teammates, but to match their performances, based on points scored, between the two teams. The closely contested competition came down to the last events.

Men's Senior Captain Alex Nash (Los Angeles, CA) edged Freshman Cristina Hession (Little Springs, NJ) by single point for the overall title and fellow senior Jimmy Veazey (Hamden, CT) by two points for the Men's title. Senior Paige Harazin (Amherst, MA) and Freshmen Moira McCloskey (Ventnor, NJ) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Women's competition, while Senior Jack Cooney (Palm Beach, FL) round out the top three men.

Multiple event winners for the competition were triple winners Kirsten Cartoski (Jonesboro, GA) in the 50 Freestyle, 100 & 200 Breaststrokes and Veazey in the 100 Freestyle, 100 & 200 Butterfly. Hession (1000 & 500 Freestyles) and Nash (100 & 200 Backstrokes) were double winners, as was Freshman Andrew Foss (Fairfax, VA) in the 500 and 200 Freestyles, Harazin (100 & 200 Freestyles) and McCloskey (100 Backstroke and 200 Individual Medley) .
