The Yale men's swimming team concluded its final preparations for the upcoming 2003-2004 season winning 10 of the 15 events at a scrimmage meet held "up the road" in New Haven at Southern Connecticut State University. No score was kept of the meet.
The winning efforts were distributed equally through out the squad from the freshman thru the upper class swimmers. Senior Captain Alex Nash (Los Angeles,CA) lead the way with two first place finishes in the 400 Individual Medley (4:12.65) and 500 Freestyle (4:43.30). Senior Jack Cooney (Palm Beach, FL) earlier in the meet won the 100 Backstroke (52.67). Each were the lead off swimmers on Yale's two relay wins. Alex swam the 50 Backstroke leg on the 200 Medley Relay that turned in a time of 1:38.80. Other members of that relay were Breaststroke sophomore Tom Hardy (Mason City, IA). senior Butterflier Jimmy Veazey (Hamden, CT) and junior John Atkinson (Boca Raton, FL), who swan the Freestyle anchor leg. Jack's teammates on the 800 Freestyle Relay (7:12.46) were fellow senior Matt Aldrich (Tucson,AZ ) and two freshmen Lou Krasenics (Seymour,CT) and Matt Thunell (Columbia, SC ).
Lou led a trio of victorious freshmen, as he won the first individual event of the meet, turning in a 9:57.92 effort in the 1000 Freestyle. Other winners from the Class of '07 were Geoff Zann (Boa Raton, FL) in the 200 Backstroke (1:57.76) and Michael Slater (Skaneateles,NY) in the final individual event of the meet, the 200 Individual Medley (2:01.81).
The middle two classes on the team were represented by junior class winners Jeff Kelsey (Washington DC) in the 200 Butterfly (1:58.79) and Joe Mack (Wilmington,DE)in the 200 Breaststroke (2:15.00). Sophomore Colin O'Brady (Portland,OR) won the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:01.84.
Ben Michelason, a graduate of SCSU who was a member of this past summer's 2003 USA Pan American team and who is currently training to qualify for the 2004 USA Olympic team, swimming exhibition was victorious in his three meet swims the 50 Freestyle (20.74), the 100 Freestyle (47.32) and 100 Butterfly (50.55). The only event won by a SCSU swimmer was the 200 Freestyle by Jacome Fernando in a time of 1:41.69.
The Bulldogs open their official season when they travel to College Park next weekend for the Maryland Invitational.
