Samaha Wins Opening Match, Joins Teammates in Second Round

New Haven, Conn. – Junior Joel Samaha won his first match in the Main Draw at the 2010 USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships Friday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center at Yale.

Samaha defeated St. Bonaventure's Elliot Fanshel, who advanced to the Main Draw by winning two matches in Qualifying play, 6-2, 6-4.  Samaha will face Binghamton's Sven Vloedgraven, who had a first-round bye, in the second round on Saturday. 

Four other Yalies – junior Erik Blumenkranz and sophomores Marc Powers, Daniel Hoffman and John Huang – will also compete in the second round following opening day byes. 

In doubles play, Yale's team of Abergel and Huang lost to Cornell's Jonathan Jaklitsch and Mirza Klis.  Yale's two other doubles teams – Hoffman/Powers and Blumenkranz/Samaha – both had opening round byes.
