Bulldogs Sweep Doubles

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team beat Quinnipiac 6-1 Friday afternoon at Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, giving the Bulldogs three wins in their last four matches. Yale swept doubles and won five of six singles matches to knock off the defending NEC Champions.

Doubles play was highlighted by an 8-3 win at No. 1 from sophomores Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers. That duo has won seven of its last nine matches.

After winning the doubles point, the Yale singles lineup quickly closed out the Bobcats. Senior Jordan Abergel, who moved up to No. 4 in the lineup after playing at No. 5 in the previous four matches, was the first off the court. He took a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Abergel was followed by sophomore John Huang, who won by the same 6-1, 6-1 scores at No. 1. Senior Ryan Berman, playing singles for just the second time this spring, clinched the match with a forehand winner that gave him a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5.

The lone loss of the day for Yale came at No. 2 singles, where Andrew Weeden beat junior Erik Blumenkranz 10-6 in the third to claim a point for Quinnipiac (3-4, 0-0 NEC). After that the only match left on the courts was at No. 6 singles, where freshman Zachary Dean won the first set 6-3 and then rallied for a 6-4 win in the second set.

Yale (5-5, 0-0 Ivy League) has now won five of the last six matches at Cullman-Heyman. The Bulldogs host Binghamton on Saturday, then head to Wilmington, N.C., for the "Battle at the Beach".
