NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After opening its Ivy Season with a 5-2 win over No. 61 Penn on Friday, the Bulldogs came up just short against the No. 58 Princeton Tigers. Princeton managed to slide past the Bulldogs with a 4-3 victory, dropping Yale to 9-8 overall (1-1 Ivy).
Princeton (10-6, 3-0 Ivy) has had a strong start to its Ivy Season thus far, beating all three Ivy competitors that it has contested. Princeton has defeated Penn, Brown, and Yale by a 4-3 margin thus far.
Yale’s doubles teams continued to play well; Yale won all three doubles matches as it did against Penn on Friday. Notably, juniors Erik Blumenkranz and Joel Samaha now boast a four-match winning streak at No. 2 doubles. These victories moved Yale to an early advantage over Princeton.
However, Yale only captured two of the singles matches: sophomore Daniel Hoffman won his match at No. 2 singles in three sets, while classmate John Huang won his match at No. 3 singles in two. Hoffman’s win continues his 11-match winning streak of the spring season, tying his previous record. However, Hoffman’s victory came after Princeton had already clinched the win.
These results mirror the Bulldogs’ performance last season, in which they defeated Penn and fell to Princeton during opening weekend. Last year, the Bulldogs went on to finish in second place in the Ivy League, tying with Cornell and Princeton. The Bulldogs lost to only Princeton and Harvard within the Ivy League. Columbia finished in first place.
The Bulldogs will be on the road next weekend. They will play Columbia on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a long trip north to Ithaca to take on Cornell at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
