Team Ranked No. 9; Three Singles Players in Top 20
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team is featured prominently in the final Northeast Region rankings, released Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Bulldogs finished No. 9 in the region as a team, and had three singles players -- rising juniors Daniel Hoffman (Atherton, Calif.), John Huang (Irvine, Calif.) and Marc Powers (Stamford, Conn.) -- ranked in the regional top 20, making Yale the only school with that many players ranked in the top 20. Additionally, the Yale doubles team of Hoffman and Powers was ranked No. 2 regionally. As the top returning doubles team in the region, Hoffman and Powers will represent the Northeast in the main draw of the All-American Championships this fall.
Powers was Yale's top-ranked singles player, finishing with a No. 9 regional ranking. A first team All-Ivy League selection in singles for the second year in a row, he ended the season with a four-match winning streak. He had six wins at the No. 1 spot and three at the No. 2 spot in the spring. He was also a unanimous first team All-Ivy selection in doubles.
Huang finished No. 11 in the regional rankings. He was a second team All-Ivy League selection, posting six wins at the No. 2 position, two at the No. 1 position and one at the No. 3 position in the spring.
Hoffman finished No. 19 in the regional rankings. A first team All-Ivy selection in doubles and a second team All-Ivy League selection in singles, he had winning streaks of eight matches and seven matches in singles en route to a 17-4 spring record, primarily at No. 3. He was 6-1 in Ivy League matches. He also earned Yale's George A. Phelps '95 Memorial Award, which is awarded to the member of the tennis team who has shown the greatest improvement during the year.
Hoffman and Powers combined to go 10-5 as a doubles team, including a 5-2 record in the Ivy League. The 2011 All-American Championships run from Oct. 1 to Oct. 9 in Tulsa, Okla.
