Bulldogs Off to Strong Start at Princeton-Farnsworth Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Yale Bulldogs took to the road to Princeton for their first matches of the 2010-11 Season on Friday. The team fielded players in each of the eight draws, and six Bulldogs have won all their matches thus far and will compete in the singles draws on Saturday.


In the "A" singles draw, both No. 2 seeded juniors Marc Powers and Daniel Hoffman advanced to the second round of tournament play on Friday. Powers breezed by Penn's Eugen Brazdil, winning the match 6-1, 6-3. Hoffman defeated Buffalo's Wotjek Starakiwiecz in two sets (6-3, 6-3).  Junior John Huang lost against St. John's Vasco Mladenov 6-2 ,6-2. Sophomore Patrick Chase, who moved up to the "A" draw when the No. 1 seed was unable to compete, lost a close first round match 6-4, 6-2. 


In the "B" singles draw, senior captain Erik Blumenkranz lost to Columbia's Nate Gery in the first round, and will play Princeton's Matt Siow, the No. 3 seed, in the consolation draw on Saturday. Senior Joel Samaha, the No. 2 seed in the "C" singles draw won his first match on Friday against Columbia's Tizian Bucher (7-5, 7-6). He will play St. John's Matty Najfeld on Saturday. Both Bulldogs in the "D" singles draw won their matches on Friday, with freshman Zachary Krumholz defeating the No. 1 seed in a quick two-set match (6-3, 6-2). Krumholz will play Jeremy Court, a freshman from Penn, on Saturday. Freshman Daniel Faierman also won his match convincingly on Friday, defeating Penn State's Harry Seaborn 6-2, 6-3. In the "E" singles draw, sophomore Kyle Dawson won his match against Buffalo's Travis Zappia 6-1, 6-2.


Powers and Hoffman, the top seeded doubles team in the "A" Doubles Draw breezed by two rounds on Friday, winning both matches with an 8-2 score. The duo will play St. John's Bojic/Madenov team on Saturday in the semi finals. Huang and freshman Matt Saiontz won their first match in the "B" Doubles Draw against Princeton's team of McCourt and Richardson. However, the Bulldogs fell to Cornell's Iyer/Sydney pair in the quarterfinals of the tournament. In the "C" Doubles Draw, Chase and sophomore Kyle Dawson lost in the first round to Columbia's Bucher/Marin pair, but won in the semifinal consolation round against Binghampton's Rodrigues and Haggai.
