FLUSHING, N.Y. – Juniors John Huang and Daniel Hoffman advance to the quarterfinals of the USTA Invitational on Friday. Huang, seeded No. 4 in the "A" Draw, bested Brown's Mike Hill in a tiebreak. Huang dropped the first set 6-1, but fought his way back to win the match (1-6, 7-6(3), 10-5). Hoffman defeated Haig Schneiderman, the No. 3 seed from Columbia, in straight sets (6-1, 6-4).
Freshman Zachary Krumholz won his first match of the tournament against Penn's Jason Magnes. Krumholz's rookie season is off to a strong start in tournament play after winning the consolation draw of the "B" doubles bracket at the Princeton-Farnsworth Tournament with classmate Daniel Faierman.
Senior Joel Samaha defeated NJIT's Holger Norregaad in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) in the "E" Singles Draw. Sophomore Patrick Chase defeated No. 4 seed Robert Wong from Penn in a hard fought three set match, which was decided by a tie-breaker after splitting sets (6-7(1); 7-6(5); 10-7). Junior Zachary Dean won his first match against Fairfeld's Bjorn Merinder in the "G" Singles Draw.
In the "C" Doubles Draw, No. 3 seeds Huang and Faierman advanced to the semifinals, where they were edged out by the No. 1 seeded team of Robert Wong and Eugen Brazdil from Penn. The finals of the doubles draws will conclude on Saturday. Chase and Tommy Ratchford will play the finals of the "D" doubles draw on Saturday against the No. 4 seeds from Marist. Chase and Ratchford defeated the No. 1 seeds of the draw in the semifinals.
