Hoffman Gets Lone Point
HANOVER, N.H. – A long day ended in defeat for the Yale men's tennis team Friday at Dartmouth's Boss Tennis Center in the first round of the ECAC Indoor Championship. Facing No. 60 Harvard in the last of four matches of the day, the Bulldogs had to wait roughly two hours past the scheduled 6 p.m. start time as the other matches dragged on. They then battled through a grueling doubles point that went Harvard's way thanks to a 9-8 win at No. 2 and an 8-6 win at No. 3. After all that, the Crimson claimed three singles matches to finish off the 4-1 win.
The final score belies the fact that in addition to a straight-set win from junior Daniel Hoffman at No. 3 singles, the Bulldogs were neck-and-neck with the Crimson in doubles and were tied at the top two singles spots when the match ended. At No. 1, junior Marc Powers won the first set 7-6 before dropping the second set 6-1. At No. 2, junior John Huang split a pair of 6-3 sets.
The doubles matches were extremely competitive. Hoffman and Powers delivered an 8-6 win at No. 1, improving to 4-0 as a team. But seniors Erik Blumenkranz and Joel Samaha fell 9-8 at No. 2, and Huang and sophomore Patrick Chase fell 8-6 at No. 3. This was the first time all season Yale has lost the doubles point.
Yale (4-1) now faces a quick turnaround, as the Bulldogs will play at 11:30 a.m. Saturday against the No. 4 seed Princeton, the No. 50 team in the national rankings. The Tigers fell to host Dartmouth, the No. 5 seed, 4-2. In Friday's other matches, No. 6 seed Brown beat No. 3 seed St. John's 4-1 and No. 2 seed Cornell, the No. 70 team in the national rankings, beat No. 7 seed Columbia 4-2.
Harvard (8-1) will face Dartmouth in the semifinals Saturday.
