Hoffman and Huang Nearly Pull Double Duty at ITA Men's All-American Championships

Senior Duo Falls in Second Round of Doubles Qualifying

TULSA, Okla. – After a tough outing in singles on Monday, two seniors on the Yale men's tennis team looked to rebound in the doubles qualifying draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-American Championships on Tuesday.  Senior captain Daniel Hoffman and classmate John Huang won their opening round match at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center, but then lost a close second round encounter.  Both players also lost their consolation singles matches.

In their first round match, Hoffman and Huang put on a fine display to defeat Thorsten Bertsch and Derek Siddiqui of San Diego State 8-3.  In their second round match, they came up against the No. 48 doubles team in the nation, comprised of Emmett Egger and Kyle McMorrow of Washington.  Hoffman and Huang once again showed good form and nearly pulled off the upset, but the No. 12 seeded tandem narrowly pulled out the 9-7 victory, knocking the Yale seniors out of the tournament.

Both Hoffman and Huang also took to the court for singles qualifying consolation matches Tuesday, with both coming up against players from the University of Florida.  The Gators finished last season ranked No. 12 in the nation.  Hoffman, ranked No. 114 in the nation, played Billy Federhofer tough, especially in the second set, but ultimately lost 6-3, 7-6(3).  Huang, ranked No. 113 in the country, took on the nation's No. 101 player, Florent Diep.  Huang took the first set, but Diep staged a comeback to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The Elis' next scheduled event is the Yale Shootout, which begins on Saturday at the Bulldogs' home courts.
