Columbia Duo Bests Hoffman and Powers at USTA/ITA Northeast Regional

Columbia Duo Bests Hoffman and Powers at USTA/ITA Northeast Regional

Hoffman and Powers Finish Runner-up for Second Straight Year

NEW HAVEN, C.T. – The singles and doubles finals of the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional tournament took place on Tuesday, the final day of competition at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.  Yale's top pairing of senior captain Daniel Hoffman and classmate Marc Powers took on Columbia's top team in the doubles final.  The Bulldogs were ultimately unable to overcome the higher-seeded Columbia duo.

Hoffman and Powers, ranked No. 54 nationally and seeded No. 3 in this event, had reached the final by upsetting the No. 1 seeded team of Princeton's Zack McCourt and Matija Pecotic in the semifinals on Monday.  In the final, they came up against the No. 2 seeded team of Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur of Columbia.  Narayana and Schnur had cruised through the draw, only dropping four games total through the first three rounds.  In the final, Hoffman and Powers managed to win four games, but it was not enough to stop the Columbia pair, who eventually sealed an 8-4 victory.  By virtue of their win, Narayana and Schnur receive an automatic entry into the doubles draw of the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. in November.  For Hoffman and Powers, the loss breaks their seven-match winning streak, but also marks their second consecutive runner-up finish at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals, which is a fine achievement considering that this event consistently features the top doubles talent in the region.

Pecotic earned a spot in the singles draw of the National Indoors by defeating Columbia's Winston Lin in the singles final in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.  Pecotic had narrowly bested Yale senior John Huang in a high-quality semifinal match on Monday.

Yale's players, especially the three seniors who advanced to the latter stages of the tournament, will only have a few days to recover from the long weekend, as the Bulldogs host the Connecticut State Championships this upcoming weekend, from Friday to Sunday.  This annual event will be the last home event of the Bulldogs' fall season.
