Bulldogs Go Undefeated in Doubles on First Day of Connecticut State Championships
Elis Also Go 7-2 in Singles, Six Players Advance to Round of 16
NEW HAVEN, C.T. – The Yale men's tennis team surged to a dominant start at the Connecticut State Championships Friday, posting an overall 14-2 record against its opponents. Playing against Connecticut's finest talent at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, the Bulldogs managed to go undefeated in doubles and also field six of the 16 remaining players in the singles draw.
Though junior Tommy Ratchford was the only Yale player not to have a bye into the second round, he worked hard to join his teammates by defeating Chris Nelson of Quinnipiac 6-4, 6-3. He was unable to pull off double duty, however, as he narrowly lost to James Barnhart in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0(4). In another three-set match, sophomore Zachary Krumholz started strong against Eric Ambrosio of Quinnipiac before Ambrosio mounted a comeback to win, 0-6, 6-3, 1-0(6).
The top four seeds in the draw, all from Yale, enjoyed fairly comfortable victories to advance to the third round. Senior captain Daniel Hoffman, the No. 1 seed and 2011 champion, began his title defense with a strong 6-2, 6-0 win over Cameron Amyot of Fairfield. Freshman Jason Brown, the No. 2 seed, having suffered his first defeat in the Northeast Regional tournament this past weekend, got back to his winning ways by easing past Marco Neves of Hartford, 6-1, 6-3. Brown's classmate, Martin Svenning, the No. 3 seed, also only dropped four games in a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ryan Carr of the University of Connecticut. Finally, sophomore Daniel Faierman, seeded No. 4, was able to weather a challenge from Quinnipiac's Garrett Lane in the second set to pull out a 6-2, 7-5 win. Junior Patrick Chase and senior Zachary Dean also advanced to the round of 16.
The Elis reinforced their reputation as a formidable doubles squad by winning all seven doubles matches they contested Friday. The team of Dean and Ratchford and the all-sophomore tandem of Faierman and Krumholz both got Yale off to a good start by winning opening-round matches. These two teams also won their second-round matches. Yale's other three teams had received automatic byes to the second round. The Bulldogs' top duo of Hoffman and senior Marc Powers continued the Elis' undefeated charge with an 8-4 win over James Cohen and Joshua Palmer of the University of Connecticut. The pairing of Chase and senior John Huang followed suit by cruising to an 8-1 victory over Bjorn Merinder and Justin Ziccardi of Fairfield. Finally, the all-freshman team of Brown and Svenning were impressive in an 8-0 win over Josh Isaacson and Marco Neves of Hartford.
The doubles quarterfinals and doubles consolation matches of the Connecticut State Championships are set to kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, with the doubles semifinals to follow. Main draw and consolation singles matches will begin at 1:00 p.m.
