Chase and Powers Lead Elis to Victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team surged past Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center to get its season off to the best possible start.  The Elis did not surrender a single set against the Bobcats, coming away with the 7-0 win.

Yale (1-0) secured the doubles point with a trio of fairly straightforward victories.  Senior Marc Powers and junior Patrick Chase, playing together at the No. 1 spot for the Bulldogs, eased to an 8-3 win over Fahoum Fahoum and Luke Roser.  The tandem of senior Zachary Dean and sophomore Matt Saiontz, having gone 3-1 in the fall, continued its success by defeating Sebastian Barbero and Garrett Lane, 8-2.  The all-underclassmen duo of sophomore Daniel Faierman and freshman Jason Brown defeated Eric Ambrosio and Alex Lazerowich, 8-4.

In singles, Chase and Powers proved their performance level could be just as high when playing individually as when playing together.  Both of them cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victories.  Brown also got his spring singles campaign off to a strong start, just as he did in the fall, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lane.  Sophomore Zachary Krumholz showed good form in a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Ambrosio.  Meanwhile, Krumholz's classmate, Faierman, faced the stiffest challenge of the day, but eventually prevailed over Fahoum 6-3, 7-5 after closing out a tight second set.  Dean rounded out Yale's undefeated afternoon by fending off Roser 6-1, 6-4.

Quinnipiac (1-1) hits the road next Saturday for a doubleheader against Brown and Binghamton.

The Bulldogs will look to make it a perfect weekend when they return to the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in less than 24 hours to take on two Connecticut teams back-to-back Sunday.  The action will start at 12:00 p.m. when the Elis face off against Fairfield.  Soon thereafter, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Yale will play Sacred Heart.
