Bulldogs Also Sweep Marist in Singles to Remain Undefeated at Home

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team kept its winning streaks alive Saturday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center with a decisive 6-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.  Later on Saturday, the Bulldogs began their match against Marist by winning all six singles matches to clinch the victory regardless of Sunday's results in doubles competition.

With the win against Fairleigh Dickinson, No. 49 Yale (7-2) extends its overall winning streak to three matches and its winning streak at home to four matches.  Though the match against Marist has not been officially completed, with the doubles point still to be contested on Sunday, the Elis' six wins in singles have effectively sealed their fourth-straight overall win and fifth-straight triumph at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs' impressive showing in doubles against Fairleigh Dickinson set the tone for the remainder of the day.  At the No. 2 spot, junior Patrick Chase and senior John Huang wasted no time in sealing an 8-2 win over Mark Hemy and Peter Svarka.  Following the lead of Chase and Huang, the Elis' No. 3 doubles tandem of senior Zachary Dean and sophomore Matt Saiontz eased to a straightforward 8-3 victory over Yuri Gricheno and Markus Sjoberg.  Since these two wins clinched the doubles point for the Bulldogs, the ongoing match at No. 1 doubles, featuring the No. 59 pairing of senior captain Daniel Hoffman and classmate Marc Powers, went unfinished.

Hoffman and Powers would get their chance in singles, however, to contribute to the Elis' victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.  Powers, at No. 2 singles, defeated Ibrahim Shams 6-3, 6-3 to extend his winning streak to four matches. Hoffman, playing at the No. 3 spot, overcame Gricheno 6-3, 6-4.  Meanwhile, Huang posted a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position.  Significantly, none of these top three seniors has lost a singles match since the Elis faced Middle Tennessee State in early February.  In the Elis' past four matches, Hoffman, Huang and Powers boast a combined 10-0 record in singles.  In the presence of these three players' supreme leadership, freshman Martin Svenning, at No. 4 singles, had the most thorough triumph of the day, imposing his powerful baseline game to defeat his opponent for the loss of only one game.  Sophomore Zachary Krumholz also rolled in his match at the No. 5 spot, dropping only two games.

Yale did not have much time to celebrate its win against Fairleigh Dickinson, however, as the squad was back on the courts later in the afternoon on Saturday for singles play against Marist.  Buoyed with confidence, the Bulldogs quickly dashed Marist's hopes of pulling off an upset with a sweep in singles.  Despite this result, which ensures the Elis of their eighth win of the season regardless of what transpires Sunday, Marist was resilient and pushed three singles matches to the full three sets.  This challenge proved a good test of the Bulldogs' mental toughness, and they passed with flying colors as Dean, Hoffman and Svenning all won their deciders.  Huang, Krumholz and Powers all secured straight-set victories.  Full results for Yale's match against Marist will be posted upon completion of doubles on Sunday.

Fairleigh Dickinson (1-3) falls to 0-2 against Ivy League teams this season, having fallen to No. 55 Princeton in February.  The Knights were scheduled to begin their match against Stony Brook late on Saturday, and will complete this match on Sunday before facing off against Marist.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, will take to the courts of the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. to finish their match against Marist.  The Elis will begin their match against Stony Brook almost immediately thereafter, at approximately 10:00 a.m.
