No. 49 Yale Completes 7-0 Win over Marist, then Sweeps Stony Brook
Bulldogs Extend Winning Streak to Five Matches, Record Fifth Shutout of the Season
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team maintained its recent run of dominant form by sealing a pair of sweeps Sunday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. After going undefeated in singles against Marist on Saturday, No. 49 Yale (9-2) quickly won the doubles point Sunday morning to complete the shutout. The Bulldogs then delivered a ruthlessly efficient performance against Stony Brook to finish off the day with yet another 7-0 victory.
In what has turned out to be an excellent first half of the spring season, Yale has gone undefeated at home (6-0) and is currently on a five-match winning streak dating back to the team's upset of Brown at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. Furthermore, out of the Bulldogs' nine wins in their first eleven matches, five of them, including the victories over Marist and Stony Brook, have been shutouts. The Elis have also fared well in matches that have gone down to the wire, having won both of the 4-3 matches they have played so far this season. In sum, Yale's record going into the second half of the spring season speaks both to the squad's all-around talent and mental toughness in the face of pressure.
At the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center Sunday, the depth of the team's lineup was on full display. On Saturday, Yale had clinched the win against Marist by winning all six of the singles matches. The final result of the clash between the Bulldogs and the Red Foxes could have easily been dependent on the doubles point, however, as three of Saturday's singles matches went the distance before senior Zachary Dean, senior captain Daniel Hoffman and freshman Martin Svenning all closed out their opponents. Sunday's doubles matches showed that the Elis were unwilling to concede anything to Marist, as Yale's No. 1 duo of Hoffman and senior Marc Powers, ranked No. 59 in the nation, and Yale's No. 3 pairing of Svenning and sophomore Matt Saiontz both rolled to fairly straightforward victories to secure the doubles point and complete the clean sweep.
The Elis carried their momentum into the match against Stony Brook, which started out much like the way the match against Marist had finished. Hoffman and Powers once again eased to victory, defeating Stony Brook's No. 1 doubles tandem of Marcelo Locatelli and Rick Timmerman 8-2. Playing at No. 3 doubles, Dean and Svenning sealed the point with an 8-3 win over Mons Knudtzon and Jose Morales.
Later in the afternoon, Yale put on a comprehensive display in singles to record its fifth sweep of the season. Playing at the No. 1 spot, senior John Huang led the charge with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Timmerman. At No. 2 singles, Powers won his sixth match in a row to keep his personal winning streak one step ahead of Yale's overall winning streak. At No. 3 singles, Hoffman defeated Morales 6-1, 6-3. Since the Bulldogs' five-match winning streak began with the win over Brown, these top three seniors have put together a combined 16-0 record in singles, which speaks to their leadership, both in terms of skill and experience. Svenning, meanwhile, posted his fourth-straight victory at the No. 4 position. Sophomore Daniel Faierman contributed to the rout with a 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot, while Dean recorded the most impressive score line of the day by defeating Leon Pan 6-1, 6-0.
Despite its loss to the Elis, Marist (6-2) defeated both Fairleigh Dickinson and Stony Brook to come out second-best at Yale's Round Robin weekend.
Stony Brook (0-5) went winless at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center and is still seeking its first win of the season. The Seawolves will get their next shot in a match against No. 55 Princeton on Friday.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, will take their five-match winning streak down to Wilmington, N.C., in one and half weeks' time, where they will take on Illinois State, UNC Wilmington and Old Dominion on Mar. 13, Mar. 14 and Mar. 17, respectively.
