Dawson, Lu and Ratchford Brothers Pick Up Wins

PRINCETON, N.J. – On the first day of the Princeton-Farnsworth Invitational, the Yale men's tennis team fielded players in five singles and two doubles flights, but all who played were knocked out of their main draws by the time Friday's play came to a close.  Despite these setbacks, two singles players and one doubles team scored wins in the consolation brackets, and four singles players still remain in contention to finish on top in their respective consolation flights.

The doubles pairing of freshman James Ratchford and senior Tommy Ratchford posted Yale's only main draw win of the day, soundly defeating NYIT's duo of Thomas Lieb and Julio Marcon, 8-2.  The brothers then played a hard-fought match against Andrew Berman and Zach Lessen of Penn in the second round, but lost in a tiebreaker, 8-7(3).

After senior captain Kyle Dawson and freshman Tyler Lu dropped their respective opening round matches, both came back to the court for their consolation draw matches with the right mindset, as both came away with victories.  Dawson won his match when his opponent, Jamie Salvador of NYIT, retired with an injury while down 5-0.  Lu, meanwhile, put in a comprehensive performance against Temple's Nicolas Paulas to record his first collegiate win, 6-1, 6-3.  Both Dawson and Lu are set to play their semifinal consolation matches on Saturday.

Though James Ratchford and sophomore Martin Svenning also lost their first round matches in singles, neither has played a consolation match yet, so they too will be in action on Saturday.  Rounding out the list of Elis still alive in the tournament is freshman Alex Hagermoser, who has not played his main draw singles match yet.  Hagermoser is set to make his collegiate debut against either Mo El Tonbario of Princeton or Brant Switzler of Monmouth.

Saturday's action begins at 9:00 a.m. at Princeton's Lenz Tennis Center.

Yale's Friday results can be found below, and full updated draws from the Princeton-Farnsworth can be found here.
