Lu Finishes Ivy Plus Run in Style

Freshman Wins 'B' Flight; Photiades Also Posts a Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two freshmen on the Yale men's tennis team ended their first home event on a high note Sunday, with one claiming a main draw victory and the other capturing a win in consolation play.  Yale's results on the final day of the Ivy Plus also included a trio of losses in three-set affairs.

Freshman Tyler Lu, playing in just his second collegiate event had enjoyed a banner weekend prior to the start of play Sunday, rolling through the 'B' draw—the second most difficult bracket in the invitational—with wins over opponents from UNC Wilmington, St. John's and Harvard.  In Sunday's final, he had his most difficult test of the week in Brian Yeung of Harvard, but Lu held firm to complete a resounding 6-5, 6-3 victory.  In doing so, Lu became the first Bulldog to win a main draw title this season.

Also tasting victory Sunday was Lu's classmate, freshman Photos Photiades, who recorded a solid win over Dartmouth's Brandon DeBot, 6-2, 6-3.  A third freshman, Alex Hagermoser, started out strongly against Shaun Hadavi of Columbia, completing a rare "bagel" first set.  Hadavi staged a comeback, however, and pulled out the 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 win.  Junior Zachary Krumholz and senior Patrick Chase also found themselves embroiled in three-set battles on Sunday, but in each case, the opponent notched the victory in the deciding super tiebreaker.

The Elis will now enjoy a week of rest before returning to match play in two weeks' time at the Army Shootout in West Point, N.Y.  The action will begin on Saturday, Oct. 5.
