Elis Stay Strong in Consolation Matches; Brown, Photiades and Svenning Post Wins

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The third day of the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships proved to be a tough outing for members of the Yale men's tennis team, as they struggled to stay alive in main draw action.  All Elis were ultimately eliminated by the end of the day, but a few players managed to salvage wins in consolation play.

Freshman Alex Hagermoser's six-match winning streak came to an end Saturday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center at the hands of Harvard's Alex Steinroeder, a 17-32 seed.  Despite Hagermoser's best efforts, Steinroeder came away with the 6-2, 6-2 victory.  Daniel Faierman, meanwhile, won his fourth match of this tournament by defeating Gary Kushnikovich of St. John's in the second round.  Faierman was just one of two qualifiers who advanced to the round of 32.  The crafty Yale junior looked to have a chance to go even deeper in the tournament after he clinched the first set of his third round match against Markus Schultz of NJIT.  Faierman was unable to grab the second set, though, and ultimately lost the match, 5-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Also gaining a third round berth was freshman Tyler Lu, whose tournament debut in singles came in his second round match, by virtue of his 9-16 seed.  Lu faced off against a qualifier, and despite having played three fewer matches in this event than his opponent, Shawn Hadavi of Columbia, he settled in quickly and stormed to a fine straight-set victory.  Lu was unable to sustain his momentum, however, as he dropped his next match to a fellow seeded player, Chris Kipouras of Dartmouth, 6-4, 6-3.

Earlier in the day, Lu had teamed up with sophomore Martin Svenning for their second round encounter against the 3-4 seeded Columbia duo of Miguel Alda and Winston Lin.  Lu and Svenning fought hard to claim the upset, but to no avail, as Alda and Lin wrapped up an 8-4 win to knock Yale's last remaining doubles team out of the main draw.

Despite their setbacks in the main draw brackets, Yale's players stayed resilient in consolation play, with three Bulldogs each picking up a win.  Freshman Photos Photiades recorded an especially impressive victory, as he withstood a comeback from his opponent, Max Vogt of Bryant, to notch a 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 triumph.  Svenning was ruthlessly efficient in his match, defeating Quinnipiac's Patrick Sell for the loss of just two games.  Finally, sophomore Jason Brown collected the first set and then the match as his opponent, Trym Nagelstad of Marist, retired.

The tennis continues Sunday at the Cullman-Heyman with the doubles round of 16 starting at 9:00 a.m.  The doubles quarterfinals matches will immediately follow, and the singles round of 16 will begin at approximately 1:00 p.m.  Though the Bulldogs have been knocked out of the main draws, they will look to secure wins in consolation play on Yale's outdoor courts.
