Faierman and Hagermoser Win in Singles; Lu and Svenning Earn Doubles Victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On the first day of main draw play at the 2013 United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships, eight members of the Yale men's tennis team took to the court looking to advance.  Playing Friday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, two of Yale's qualifiers managed to continue their winning ways in singles, while one doubles pairing scored a win.

One day after qualifying for the main draw, freshman Alex Hagermoser extended his singles winning streak to six matches with a 6-4, 6-3 win over fellow Ivy League player Sam Fife of Brown.  Hagermoser's strong efforts in his debut Regional tournament have earned him a meeting with Alex Steinroeder of Harvard, who is a 17-32 seed.  Junior Daniel Faierman, who also won two matches Thursday to earn a berth in the main draw, advanced with a hard-fought comeback victory over Sam Lampman of Army, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.  Faierman is set to face St. John's Gary Kushnikovich, a 9-16 seed, in the next round.  Both Faierman and Hagermoser will be looking to use their status as qualifiers to their advantage in these encounters, as they will aim to draw confidence from the experience of already having played, and won, three matches in the event.

Three other Bulldogs in action Friday—senior captain Kyle Dawson, freshman Photos Photiades and sophomore Martin Svenning—lost their first round matches, but all three will be looking to rebound in consolation play.

In doubles, Svenning and freshman Tyler Lu claimed victory in their first round match against Adrian Bailly and Ari Richman of Hofstra.  After an even set of tennis between the two teams, the Elis pulled out the ensuing tiebreaker to notch the 8-7 victory.  Lu and Svenning will next play the Columbia tandem of Miguel Alda and Winston Lin, a 3-4 seed.  Also playing Friday were the doubles teams of Dawson and senior Patrick Chase and Hagermoser and sophomore Jason Brown.  Both teams were unable to overcome their opponents, however, but Brown, Chase and Dawson will be eligible to sign up for the singles consolation draw.

Saturday at the Northeast Regionals will see the region's elite converge on the Cullman-Heyman for one round of doubles beginning at 8:00 a.m., with two rounds of singles to be played thereafter.  Lu and Svenning will look to complete the upset, while Faierman and Hagermoser will be aiming to extend their impressive runs.  Lu, as a 9-16 seed, will be making his singles debut against Shawn Hadavi of Columbia.

Yale's Friday results can be found below, and full updated draws can be found at the following links (the singles consolation draw will not be made until tomorrow after sign up ends):
