No. 58 Yale Plays Host to No. 68 East Tennessee
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A competitive clash awaits the Yale men's tennis team in the squad's first home match of the regular season. No. 58 Yale (1-1, 0-0 Ivy) is slated to take on an opponent ranked just 10 spots below the Bulldogs in the national rankings, No. 68 East Tennessee (1-4, 0-0 A-Sun). Despite the evenness of the matchup in terms of ranking, the Elis will aim to capitalize on their home court advantage when they face the Buccaneers on Sunday.
The Elis began the season with a pair of matches on the road in Blacksburg, Va., defeating Davidson before falling to Virginia Tech. These results saw Yale move up one spot in the national team rankings. Sunday's encounter against East Tennessee will mark the first of seven consecutive matches at home for the Bulldogs. Yale has a good history in home matches, having gone 10-2 in this category in the 2012-13 season, and will look to maintain that success this season.
As is often the case, the doubles point was pivotal to the outcome of both of the Elis' matches in Virginia. The duo of freshman Tyler Lu and sophomore Martin Svenning will look to provide leadership at the No. 1 spot, while the veteran pairing of senior Patrick Chase and senior captain Kyle Dawson will aim to anchor Yale's efforts to secure the doubles point. In singles, Lu, Svenning and junior Daniel Faierman will lead the charge, though the Bulldogs will have to make do without freshman Photos Photiades, who will be in Denmark on Sunday playing for his country, Cyprus, in the first round of the 2014 Davis Cup.
Yale has not faced East Tennessee in recent years, though the team did make a trip to Nashville, Tenn., last season to play Middle Tennessee. This year's opponent, however, has had a fairly busy start to the season, playing no less than five matches in seven days. East Tennessee has won just one of these matches, and takes on No. 64 Dartmouth on Friday before traveling to New Haven for the match against Yale on Sunday.
