Elis Claim Doubles Point; Lu Scores Upset in Singles
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Yale men's tennis team lost its first match at the "Battle at the Beach" on Wednesday against No. 55 UNC Wilmington. By powering their way to five victories in singles, the host Seahawks prevailed 5-2 in a rematch of last year's encounter between the two teams. The defeat was not without some highlights for the Bulldogs, however. The Elis began the match with an upset in doubles en route to stealing the doubles point, and then freshman Tyler Lu notched an impressive upset at No. 1 singles.
In an inauspicious beginning to the match, Lu and sophomore Martin Svenning, playing for the Bulldogs at No. 1 doubles, succumbed 8-2 to Rafael Aita and Sam Williams of UNC Wilmington. This loss ends Lu's 11-match winning streak in completed doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, however, the dependable veteran duo of senior Patrick Chase and senior captain Kyle Dawson upset the No. 64 tandem in the nation of Pedrol Mol and Kaue Pereira. With the battle for the doubles point locked at one win apiece, the competitive tussle at the No. 3 spot became the decider. In a superb display of teamwork and mental toughness, Yale's duo of junior Daniel Faierman and freshman Alex Hagermoser held its own to overcome the Seahawk team of Santtu Leskinnen and Christiaan Van der Burgh, 8-7(7).
By snatching the doubles point, the Bulldogs put pressure on the favored Seahawks to secure no less than four victories in singles play. Despite Yale's best efforts to prevent UNC Wilmington from fulfilling this quota, the Seahawks recorded four straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 singles. Of these four defeats, Faierman, playing at the No. 4 spot, lost by the closest margin, 6-3, 6-4. If these two sets had gone his way, the Bulldogs would have been in a good position to pull off the upset against UNC Wilmington. At No. 6 singles, junior Zachary Krumholz nearly mounted a comeback before ultimately falling 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to Van der Burgh. Lu, who headed the Bulldog lineup at No. 1 singles, did manage to complete a successful comeback in his match. It was all the more significant as he knocked off an opponent ranked 61 spots higher than him in the rankings, No. 53 Rafael Aita. The match came down to the wire and the final score read 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(5).
Yale will look to take the positives from this match and return to "Battle at the Beach" action on Friday ready to put in a strong effort against Binghamton. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at UNC Wilmington's courts.
