Tyler Lu Honored as ITA Rookie of the Year for Northeast Region

Lu Distinguishes Himself with 16-4 Record in Singles, National Ranking of No. 104

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released the names of its annual award winners on Tuesday, and Tyler Lu was among the honorees as the Division I Rookie of the Year for the Northeast Region.  The honor serves as recognition of Lu's impressive record against fellow Northeast Region opponents for the 2013-14 season.

Lu, who began the regular season with a preseason regional ranking of No. 18 in singles, compiled a 16-4 record, playing at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs for all 20 of these matches.  Three of his four losses came against Northeast Region opponents, all veteran players.  His overall record included two separate six-match winning streaks, and he came away the winner in all five matches that went to a final set.  As a result of his steady success throughout the season, his national ranking as of May 1 stands at No. 104.  Final regional and national rankings will be released by June 4.

In addition to his success on the singles court, Lu also played a leading role in the Elis' doubles efforts this past season.  He played 19 matches at the No. 1 doubles spot, primarily alongside Martin Svenning.  He began the season by winning his first seven matches in doubles, and finished the season with a 13-5 win-loss mark.

Lu prefaced his success during the regular season with a productive fall campaign.  In just his second tournament as a college player, he surged to victory in the 'B' flight of the Ivy Plus Invitational.  He then pulled double duty at the Connecticut State Championships, taking the singles title and emerging victorious in the doubles draw alongside classmate Photos Photiades.  In all, between his fall and spring seasons, Lu put together a 30-7 record in singles and a 21-10 record in doubles.

For his efforts during the Ivy League portion of the season, Lu was honored with a unanimous selection to the First Team All-Ivy for singles.  He had the added distinction of being the only freshman in the league to receive First Team recognition.

The ITA Award Winners will be honored at a luncheon on Tuesday, May 20, at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Men's and Women's Championships in Athens, Ga.
