Seven Wins in Singles

PHILADELPHIA – Play got underway at the third annual Penn Invitational for the Yale men's tennis team on Friday. Bulldog players won seven of their eight singles matches, and also got a pair of doubles wins.

Players from 14 different schools have been divided into eight singles flights and four doubles flights for the three-day invitational at the Hamlin Tennis Courts in Penn Park and inside the Quakers' Levy Tennis Pavilion.

Yale players got four wins in singles against players from Drexel, with three of the four victories coming in straight sets. The Bulldogs also had a pair of doubles teams win against teams from Drexel.

On Friday Yale players also had four singles matches and a pair of doubles matches against players from Columbia -- the defending Ivy League champions, who advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last year.

Columbia teams won two doubles matches against teams from Yale, with the duo of freshman Fedor Andrienko and sophomore Photos Photiades and the duo of seniors Zachary Krumholz and Matt Saiontz falling. But Yale players won three of four singles matches vs. Columbia players -- including two in straight sets. Freshman Ziqi Wang topped Columbia's Bert Vancura 6-3, 6-3. Senior Daniel Faierman bested Columbia's Miguel Alda 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5). Sophomore Alex Hagermoser rallied for a three-set win vs. Columbia's Daniel Grunberger, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, winning 12 of the last 14 games to complete his comeback.

Columbia's lone win by a singles player against Yale came from Eric Rubin, who topped sophomore Martin Svenning 6-3, 6-0.

The Bulldogs are playing without sophomore standout Tyler Lu, who is set to take part in the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla., starting Sunday.

Yale resumes play Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
