Elis Go a Combined 14-2 in Saturday's Matches

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The first day of the Yale Shootout at the Bulldogs' Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center saw the Elis take on opponents from Army and St. Bonaventure.  In a day of tennis that saw several Yale players showcase their talent and season preparation, the Bulldogs won all but two matches against Army and went undefeated in singles against St. Bonaventure.

The Bulldogs started the day with multiple high-quality clashes with Army.  In singles, sophomore Tyler Lu, fresh off his participation at the All-American Championships, fended off a comeback from his opponent, Sam Lampman, to finish a 6-0, 6-7, 6-0 victory.  Freshman Ziqi Wang also gained a notable straight-set win over Alex Van Velzer, further adding to his rookie season success.  Sophomores Alex Hagermoser and Photos Photiades and junior Martin Svenning also picked up straight-set triumphs in their Army contests.

In doubles play against Army, Lu teamed up with freshman Stefan Doehler to defeat the Army duo of Kyle Barnes and Austin McCasin.  Hagermoser and Photiades likewise picked up where they left off at the Penn Invitational last weekend by overcoming Michael Nguyen and Grant Riechmann by an 8-5 decision.

The Eli performances became even better once matches against St. Bonaventure began.  Hagermoser, Photiades, Lu, Svenning and Wang all became two-time singles winners on the day, each recording a straight-set victory.  Doehler, for his part, made the most significant turnaround on Saturday, as he had lost his match against Army's Nguyen in three tough sets, but rebounded to defeat St. Bonaventure's TJ DeSanto 6-2, 6-2.  Senior Daniel Faierman also added to Yale's accumulation of wins with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Victor Blanco.

Yale's full results from Saturday's play can be found below.

The Yale Shootout will continue on Sunday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.  The Bulldogs will contest their doubles matches against St. Bonaventure, and then will take on players from Bryant in both singles and doubles.  The action begins at 9 a.m.
