Seven Bulldogs Reach Singles Round of 16; All Five Doubles Teams Earn Quarterfinal Berths

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team stood tall on the opening day of the Connecticut State Championships.  Playing in front of their home fans at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on Friday, the Elis went a combined 15-4 in singles and doubles match play.  By the time the last ball was struck, seven Bulldogs remained alive in the singles main draw and all five of Yale's doubles teams fended off their opponents to reach the quarterfinal stage.

Eleven of Yale's players took part in singles main draw action on Friday.  Junior Jason Brown and senior Matt Saiontz got the tournament underway with two hard-fought wins.  Brown overcame Sacred Heart's Justin Pagan 6-4, 7-6, while Saiontz managed to stymie a comeback by Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen, also of Sacred Heart, to record a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(8) triumph.

With their first round wins, Brown and Saiontz joined their teammates in the second round.  The eight other Elis had received automatic byes into the second round.  Freshmen Fedor Andrienko, Stefan Doehler and Ziqi Wang, sophomores Tyler Lu and Photos Photiades, junior Martin Svenning and senior Daniel Faierman all recorded comfortable straight-set wins to advance to the round of 16 stage.  Andrienko, Faierman and Wang logged particularly impressive showings, as each won a 6-0 set en route to victory.

Once Yale's attention turns to the regular dual match format in the spring, doubles will take on added importance.  The Bulldogs will draw confidence from their current high level of doubles play, as they went undefeated in main draw doubles play on Friday.  While Brown and Saiontz were both eliminated in their second round singles encounters, they teamed up to notch a pair of doubles victories.  In their first round match, Brown and Saiontz overcame the Sacred Heart duo of Pilote-Schraenen and Cory Seltman 8-3.  In the round of 16, Brown and Saiontz came up against Qunnipiac's duo of Kei Ezaka and Jonas Kuwert.  After a competitive tussle, the Bulldogs emerged with the 8-6 win.

Svenning and Wang picked up where they left off at the Northeast Regionals by defeating UConn's tandem of Jonathan Edwards and Joshua Palmer 8-3 in second round action.  The all-freshman duo of Andrienko and Doehler showed grit in upending Fairfield's team of Luke Lemieux and Brad Orban 8-6.  The Eli teams of Photiades and sophomore Alex Hagermoser and Faierman and Lu also earned quarterfinal berths with 8-3 victories.

With Yale occupying five out of eight slots in the Connecticut State Championships doubles quarterfinals lineup, there will be one all-Bulldog clash on Saturday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, and it will pit the experienced pair of Brown and Saiontz against the freshman team of Andrienko and Doehler.  The Elis have managed to avoid one another in the singles round of 16, but should several of the seven win their next matches, multiple all-Yale affairs will take place in the quarterfinals and beyond.

Yale's full results from Friday can be found below.  Full updated draws can also be found below.

Two rounds each of singles and doubles will be played on Saturday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, and Yale will look to continue to use the home support to its advantage.  Matches start at 10:00 a.m.
