Yale Finishes Undefeated Weekend with Wins over Colgate and Monmouth

Bulldogs Impress in Singles Play

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team completed a superb start to its season on Sunday with consecutive wins over Colgate and Monmouth.  One day after clipping Buffalo 4-3, the Bulldogs returned to the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center to finish a 7-0 sweep over Colgate.  Yale then upended Monmouth 6-1 to open the season on a three-match winning streak.

On Saturday, Yale had begun its contest against Colgate by emerging victorious in all six singles matches.  At No. 1 singles, Ziqi Wang, ranked No. 95 in the nation, staged a comeback to defeat Colgate's Jacob Daugherty in three competitive sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.  The remaining five singles players—senior Daniel Faierman, junior Photos Photiades, sophomore Alex Hagermoser and freshmen Fedor Andrienko and Stefan Doehler—all recorded fairly comfortable straight-set wins.

Sunday saw the conclusion of the Colgate match as both teams took to the court for doubles.  Despite a loss at the No. 2 spot, the Bulldogs managed to seal the 7-0 victory by claiming wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

Transitioning immediately to the Monmouth encounter, Yale did not get off to the most auspicious start, dropping two doubles matches.  The all-freshman duo of Andrienko and Doehler nonetheless posted a 7-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

Though Monmouth had the slim lead heading into singles play, it was the Bulldogs who bounced back with another string of six singles victories.  At No. 1 singles, sophomore Tyler Lu defeated Victor Pugliese 7-5, 6-4, while Wang followed suit at the No. 2 spot, scoring a 6-4, 7-6 win over Przemyslaw Filipek.  Faierman and Hagermoser both produced three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively, while junior Martin Svenning won at the No. 4 spot with the loss of only three games.  With his 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Monmouth's Luke Adamus at No. 6 singles, Doehler became the only member of the Yale squad to win three singles matches over the course of the weekend.

Yale's next set of matches will take place in one week's time.  The Bulldogs host Fairfield and Iowa this coming weekend.
