Bulldogs Dismiss Colonials in 4-1 Decision

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team made full use of its home court advantage on Friday in its opening match of the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship.  Playing at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, the Bulldogs upset No. 61 George Washington 4-1 in a close encounter to set up a showdown with No. 30 Harvard in the quarterfinal round.

Friday's clash against the Colonials marked Yale's fifth victory of the season so far, but it did not come easily.  The battle for the doubles point was a tense affair, as George Washington and Yale traded 6-4 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively.  At the No. 2 spot, the freshman duo of Fedor Andrienko and Stefan Doehler claimed a win over Chris Fletcher and Chris Reynolds.  The No. 3 doubles match proved decisive, as the sophomore tandem of Alex Hagermoser and Tyler Lu narrowly overcame Christos Hadjigeorgiou and Cahit Kapukiran 7-6 to hand the Bulldogs momentum heading into singles play.

True to its national ranking, however, George Washington made Yale work for the win in singles, with five of the individual matches seeing a third set.  Andrienko recorded the only straight-set victory of the day by besting Hadjigeorgiou 7-6, 6-2.  Though George Washington's No. 1 player handed Lu his first singles loss of the season, Doehler and senior Daniel Faierman pulled through for the Elis.  Doehler staged a comeback and finished strong to notch a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Reynolds, while Faierman fended off a comeback from his opponent, Kapukiran, to secure a hard-earned 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory.

Full results from Friday's match against George Washington can be found below.

The Bulldogs will now travel to Harvard's home turf to engage their perennial rival in a quarterfinal encounter on Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m.  Other ECAC quarterfinal matches pit No. 57 Princeton against No. 63 Cornell, No. 51 Penn against No. 68 Brown and No. 50 Dartmouth against No. 74 St. John's.
