Crimson Defeat Bulldogs 4-0; Lu Splits Sets with Harvard's No. 1 Player

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Yale men's tennis team came up short against No. 30 Harvard on Saturday at the latter's home courts.  The two rivals took to the court for a quarterfinal encounter at the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship, and Harvard ultimately sealed a 4-0 victory to advance to the semifinal round.

One day after topping No. 61 George Washington at home, Yale had made the trek north to Harvard's turf, where the Crimson immediately gained the upper hand by emerging victorious from a tough battle for the doubles point.  Harvard gained wins at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles, but by slim margins of 6-4 and 7-6(4), respectively.  At the No. 3 spot, the Yale sophomore duo of Alex Hagermoser and Tyler Lu were locked at six games apiece with the Harvard team of Grant Solomon and Alex Steinroeder.

Harvard used its momentum to full advantage, securing three singles victories before Yale could get on the scoreboard.  The Crimson posted wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles before Steinroeder sealed the win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over junior Martin Svenning at No. 3 singles.  At the conclusion of play, senior Daniel Faierman had lost the first set of his match against Brian Yeung but had the upper hand in the second set, while Lu had split sets with Harvard's No. 1 player and the No. 91 player in the country, Denis Nguyen.

Full results from Saturday's match against Harvard can be found below.

Yale will now face No. 63 Cornell in a consolation match starting on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. at Harvard's courts.
