Cheng, King, Lu Claim Singles Victories; Doehler, Hagermoser Star in Doubles as Yale Hosts Scrimmage vs. Brown
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team kicked off its spring season at home with a scrimmage against Brown on Monday. After a long winter break, the Elis made a convincing return, showing little sign of rust and securing victories across the board in both singles and doubles. Although the results of the scrimmage are unofficial and have not yet been made publicly available, a general recap of Monday's action reveals a positive overall performance for the Bulldogs.
Many of the highlights of Monday's action came in doubles, where the Elis posted several significant victories. No. 1 doubles team Stefan Doehler and Alex Hagermoser showed veteran savvy with victories over Brown's No. 1 and No. 3 teams; Tyler Lu and Ziqi Wang also found success against Brown's No. 2 pairing. Freshman duo Ryan Cheng and Andrew Heller also won their match in the No. 4 spot, rounding out an impressive overall doubles performance by the Bulldogs.
Three Yale players also notched victories in singles on Monday. Senior captain Lu turned heads with a victory over Brown's No. 1 player, while freshman Dylan King excelled in the No. 3 spot. Fellow freshman Cheng also followed up his doubles victory with a win at No. 6 singles.
Considering the strength and talent of Brown's lineup, Yale's convincing performance on Monday will serve as a solid foundation for the remainder of the spring season. The Elis will start the dual match season in earnest this coming weekend by hosting Buffalo (Saturday) and William & Mary (Friday).
