Doehler, King, Lu, Z. Wang Notch Singles Victories as No. 45 Yale Downs Brown, 5-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team opened the 2017 Ivy League season in style on Sunday, cruising to a 5-2 victory over Brown at home. Despite the strength of their opponents, who came into the weekend riding an eight-match win streak, the Elis played exceptionally well across the board and were comfortably in control throughout. Sunday's impressive performance not only improved the Bulldogs' record to 8-3 (5-0 at home), but also marked their fourth consecutive victory over tough competition; the team's recent success has coincided with its rise to an ITA national ranking of No. 45. One of the main takeaways from Sunday's match was the strong play at the top end of Yale's singles lineup, where three of the top four players won in straight sets; these same players also made important contributions in doubles.

Sunday's conference clash began with a competitive round of doubles. Freshman duo Ryan Cheng and Dylan King drew first blood for the Bulldogs with a decisive 6-2 win over Brown's Anthony Arocho and Peter Tarwid at No. 2 doubles; this result improved the pairing's record together to 8-2 on the season. After Brown's Lucas Da Silveira and Greg Garcia responded at the No. 1 spot with a 6-3 victory over Yale's Stefan Doehler and Alex Hagermoser, however, the doubles point ultimately fell on the shoulders of veterans Tyler Lu and Ziqi Wang in the No. 3 position. After trading several service games with their opponents and finding themselves in a pivotal moment at 5-4, the Elis ultimately rose to the occasion to take the match, 6-4.

Following a positive performance in doubles, the Bulldogs headed into Sunday's singles action with confidence, winning a number of matches in quick succession. While Brown's Peter Litsky topped freshman Andrew Heller in straight sets at No. 6 singles, Yale's top three players all posted straight-set victories of their own. At the No. 3 position, King made quick work of Brown's Jack Haworth in a 6-3, 6-0 win; this result improved the freshman's singles record this spring to 9-2. Junior Ziqi Wang has also excelled this spring, improving his singles record to 6-1 on Sunday by downing Brown's Tarwid 6-3, 6-1. Senior captain Tyler Lu submitted a similarly impressive performance at No. 1 singles, dominating baseline play in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Brown's Aaron Sandberg; this result marked yet another win for the Bulldog, who leads the team with an unbeaten 8-0 singles record in 2017.

The two closest matches of the day came at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. In the No. 5 spot, the freshman Cheng fought well to hang with Brown's Jacob Walker, who came into Sunday's clash having won his last five matches; Walker ultimately edged the Bulldog, however, claiming a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 victory. Yale's Stefan Doehler also played a remarkably tight match at No. 4 singles, reaching a third set against Brown's Da Silveira. After winning the first set by a single service break, Doehler faltered and dropped the second, 6-3; he maintained composure and rebounded well in the third, however, to take the final set 7-6 with a clutch tiebreak performance.

Success in Sunday's Ivy League season opener bodes well for the remainder of Yale's spring season, which will feature a number of nationally ranked opponents. The Elis will take a break from conference action until Apr. 7, when they are scheduled to play Dartmouth in Hanover. The Bulldogs will be busy in the meantime with events like this upcoming weekend's Yale Invitational, which will bring Fairfield, Marist, and Stony Brook to New Haven.
