New York, NY - The Bulldogs completed play at the Columbia Classic Sunday in New York. Junior Josh Lederman and freshman Calvin Bennett advanced to the semifinals of the doubles bracket at the annual tournament.
In the round of 16, Lederman and Bennett defeated Harvard's Aba Omodele-Lucien and Dan Nguyen 9-8. Lederman and Bennett then provided the highlight of the weekend for the Bulldogs with an upset of Columbia's Bogdan Borta and Justin Chow in the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Yale duo defeated the No. 20 ranked doubles team in the country, No. 1 in the Northeast region, 9-8. Lederman and Bennett came up short in the semifinals 8-6.
Sophomore Connor Dawson had an impressive showing in the singles `B' Flight draw with three set victories in the round of 16 and quarterfinals. Dawson defeated Loic Sessageesimi of Marist 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the round of 16 and Kevin Kung of Columbia 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Dawson could not pull off the victory against Cornell's Josh Goldstein.
In the singles `A' Flight, junior Michael Caldwell advanced to the consolation finals with victories over Justin Chow of Columbia and Christian Coley of Marist. In the consolation quarterfinals, Caldwell pulled out a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(7) win over Chow. Caldwell make quick work of Coley in the semifinals with a straight set win. Caldwell could not capture the consolation championship as he fell to Farleigh Dickinson's Philip Stephens, who is ranked No. 21 in the northeast region.
