Brandon Wai and Ryan Murphy will face each other in the "A" championship of the Columbia Invitational Sunday after wins in the second round of play on Saturday. Yale's No. 1 player, Andrew Rosenfeld, pulled out due to an injury. Wai and Murphy will play as a team in the doubles championship as well. Yale also has a player in the "B" singles bracket championship, Rowan Reynolds.
All six Yale players won their first-round matches Friday. The Elis won three matches in "A" singles and three in the "B" bracket.
In "A" singles, Rosenfeld defeated Diego Alvarado 6-3, 6-4, while Wai dispatched Erez Cohen in a three-set match, coming back from a 4-6 first set to win the next two 6-5, 7-5. Murphy completed Yale's "A" singles victories with a 6-1, 6-1 trouncing of Arthur Velnick.
The Elis fared just as well in the "B" bracket, where Reynolds easily defeated Alan Bohane 6-1, 6-1 and Milosz Gudzowski was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over David Alvarado. Neil Tolaney wrapped up Yale's results with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Mike Nassif.
In doubles, the team of Murphy and Wai advanced to the semifinals.
The Elis continue play throughout the weekend.
