NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In their last match before starting Ivy League play next week, the Yale men's tennis team defeated Manhattan 6-1 today in New Haven. Down early in a majority of their matches, the team nonetheless fought back to win its third straight and improve to 7-6 on the season.
Though the score implies a resounding win, the Bulldogs were actually down a break early on in all three doubles matches. The Elis were able to weather the storm, however, and swept the matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The No. 1 squad of Rowan Reynolds and Rory Green defeated Peter Czink and Bogdan Borta 8-4, No. 2 Brandon Wai and Michael Caldwell beat Zoltan Bus and Philip Szymik 8-3, and No. 3 Milosz Gudzowski and Chris Lawler handled David Alvarado and K-Ming Lee, 8-5.
The Bulldogs struggled early on in each of the top four singles matches as well, but were able to overcome broken serves to take three of those four. No. 1 Brandon Wai, currently ranked No. 90 in the country, swept Borta 6-4, 6-4, No. 3 Jeff Dawson stormed back after a tough first set to beat Bus 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 and No. 4 Michael Caldwell downed Alvarado in straight sets, 7-6, 6-0.
"I think our determination was really strong, and that looks good for the Ivy League," Cary Leeds Head Coach Alex Dorato said of the comeback wins.
No. 5 Green and No. 6 Reynolds also notched singles wins for the Elis. Green handled Szymik in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, and Reynolds thrashed Lee, 6-1, 6-0.
"We struggled a little bit early on in some matches, but other than that, we fought hard," Dorato said. "We just need to get off to a quicker start."
The Bulldogs will open Ivy League play next weekend when they hit the road to take on Penn at 2:00 p.m. on Friday and Princeton at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
