PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Yale men's tennis team suffered a tough 5-2 loss today in Philadelphia to No. 52 Penn to open their Ivy League season. Brandon Wai came back to win a three-set match at No. 1, and Rowan Reynolds also picked up a victory in the No. 6 slot for the No. 73 Bulldogs (7-7, 0-1).
The Elis certainly battled in three very close doubles matches, but ultimately ceded the opening point to the Quakers. No. 1 Reynolds and Rory Green fell to Jason Pinsky and Joseph Lok 8-6, No. 2 Wai and Michael Caldwell lost 8-3, and No. 3 Milosz Gudzowski and Chris Lawler fell 8-6 as well.
In singles, too, the Bulldogs played several tight matches but couldn't quite close the deal in most of them. No. 4 Caldwell fell to Joseph Lok 7-6, 6-4, and No. 5 Green lost to Justin Fox in a hard-fought three-set match. No. 1 Wai--currently No. 79 in the country--scored an impressive comeback win over No. 92 Jason Pinsky, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, and No. 6 Reynolds picked up a solid 7-5, 6-3 win over Jimmy Fairbanks for the other Yale point.
The Elis will try to bounce back tomorrow, when they head to Princeton to take on the Tigers at 12:00 p.m.
