Yale Nips Cornell, 4-3
April 15, 2006
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After a resounding 6-1 win against Columbia yesterday, men's tennis continued its hot streak today against No. 71 Cornell, winning a very close 4-3 match in New Haven. Though the Bulldogs' three singles wins came in straight sets, a narrow 9-7 win by Milosz Gudzowski and Chris Lawler at No. 3 doubles proved crucial for the Elis (10-7, 3-1).
Indeed, all three doubles matches were tight ones. No. 1 Rowan Reynolds and Rory Green fell to Nicholas Brunner and Joshua Raff--currently the No. 53 ranked doubles team in the nation--by a score of 8-6. The Bulldogs picked up victories in the other two doubles matches, however, as No. 2 Brandon Wai and Michael Caldwell defeated Daniel Brous and Josh Goldstein 8-4, and No. 3 Gudzowski and Lawler eked out the 9-7 win over Brett McKeon and Kyle Doppelt.
Though the final score ended up 4-3, the Bulldogs' singles victories were relatively easy. No. 1 Wai defeated McKeon 6-2, 6-4, No. 2 Gudzowski beat Raff 6-3, 6-2, and No. 5 Green downed Doppelt, 6-4, 6-2. The other three matches were extremely competitive, but Cornell was able to eke out victories in all of them to bring the final score to 4-3.
The Bulldogs will head to Cambridge on Fri., Apr. 21, to take on the Crimson in their next match. Despite a slow start, the Cantabs recently snapped Penn's 12-match winning streak, and should prove to be formidable opponents.
