Ithaca, NY - The men's tennis team came extremely close to victory over Cornell on Saturday afternoon, but was ultimately defeated by a one point margin in singles play. Today's match gives Yale an overall record of 5-12 and an Ivy record of 1-3.
The Bulldogs dominated doubles play, deftly sweeping all three matches. No. 3 doubles Milosz Gudzowski and Rory Green wasted no time in asserting Yale's double's prowess, smashing their opponents by a score of 8-4. Rowan Reynolds and Chris Lawler continued the streak by pulling through with a big win at the No. 2 spot, going 9-8(4) in a highly heated match. Once again, the stellar team of Ryan Murphy and Brandon Wai scored big against Cornell, winning the No. 1 game 8-5 and clinching the doubles point for the Elis.
After being totally shut out by the strong Yale team in doubles play, Cornell countered by coming back to win the No. 6, 5, 4 and 3 singles games. The No. 3 game was an intense battle between Reynolds and Cornell's Joshua Raff that came down to Raff narrowly topping Reynolds in the third round. Raff and Reynolds went 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4.
Murphy followed up Reynold's dedicated effort with a hard fought win in the No. 2 game. Murphy defeated Nicholas Brunner 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(8). Brandon Wai followed Murphy's victory with an easy win in the No. 1 spot, effortlessly sweeping the match 6-4, 6-1 and showing why he is ranked 78th in the nation.The Bulldogs look forward to an exciting match against Harvard on Fri., Apr. 22, at 2:30 in New Haven.
