FLUSHING, NY - The Bulldogs opened their season this past weekend with the USTA National Tennis Center Men's College Tennis Invitational in Flushing, NY.
The tournament consisted of three main doubles draws and seven main singles draws. In addition, players had the chance to compete in backdraws.
In the Doubles-I draw, senior Michael Caldwell and junior Connor Dawson won their first match 8-5 over Wong and Borta of Columbia before dropping their second round match 8-5. Caldwell and Dawson then won their backdraw match 8-6 over Gardner and Garland of Brown.
Senior Josh Lederman and sophomore Calvin Bennett dropped an 8-3 match to Hayes and Mangham of Harvard and an 8-4 match to Nichifor and Schneiderman of Columbia in the Doubles-I draw. Lederman and Bennett won the backdraw of the backdraw thanks to Svetlakov and Kosaut of St. John's forfeit.
Senior Jeff Dawson and freshman Erick Blumenkranz advanced to the finals of the Doubles-II draw with three victories. Dawson and Blumenkranz then lost at the hands of Nolan and Kreutzer of Boston College 9-8 (6) in the finals of the Doubles-II draw.
In the Singles-I draw, Jeff Dawson won the backdraw after losing first round in a tough three set match. Dawson went on to defeat Jonathan Peralman of Brown 6-3, 4-6, (10-7) and Alex Krueger-Wyman 1-6, 6-1, (10-7) to win his backdraw.
Caldwell lost his first two matches before defeating Jonathan Pearlman of Brown 6-3, 6-2 of the backdraw of the backdraw for the Singles-I draw.
In the Singles III-draw, Connor Dawson defeated Haig Schneiderman of Columbia 6-4, 6-4 before losing his next match and his backdraw match.
Bennett lost his first two matches in the Singles-III draw before defeating Sam Garland of Brown 6-1, 6-3 in the backdraw of the backraw.
Blumenkranz defeated his opponent in the first round of the Singles-V draw before dropping his second round match in three sets. Blumenkranz then dropped his backdraw match as well.
Freshman Joel Samaha cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chris Albornoz in the first round of the Singles-V draw before dropping his second round match and his backdraw match as well.
Also in the Singles-V draw, Lederman dropped his first round match and his backdraw match before winning his second backdraw match 6-2, 6-1. In the Singles-VI draw, Santoro pulled out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over John Lucero of Army before dropping his second round match and then his consolation match.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Friday at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational in Princeton, NJ.
