Bulldogs Compete at Princeton-Farnsworth Invitational

PRINCETON, NJ - The Bulldogs competed at the annual Princeton-Farnsworth Invitational this weekend at the University of Princeton. Senior Michael Caldwell and freshman Joel Samaha provided the highlight of the weekend for the Bulldogs by winning the "B" doubles flight.

The tournament was divided into two singles flights and two doubles flights as well as consolation matches for players who lost in the maindraw.

In the "A" singles flight, junior Connor Dawson, senior Jeff Dawson, and sophomore Calvin Bennett all won their first round matches to advance to the second round. Jeff Dawson then won his second round match before falling in the third round.

Jeff Dawson cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 win over Pavel Cerny of St. John's in the first round. Dawson then pulled out a 6-2, 4-6, (10-7) victory over Sven Vloegraven of Binghamton. Columbia's Bogden Borta then eliminated Dawson with a 6-4, 6-2 win the third round.

In the first round, Connor Dawson rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Cornell's Kyle Doppelt before dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision in the second round. Dawson dropped a consolation match he played against Cornell's Jonathan Jaklitsch 8-5. Bennett defeated Cornell's Josh Goldstein in the first round before losing to GW's Erik Hannah. Bennett defeated Princeton's Peter Capkovic in his consolation match.

Caldwell lost his first round match in the "A" singles flight before advancing to the semifinals of the consolation draw. Caldwell dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Jeremy Feldman, but quickly bounced back in the consolation. Caldwell rolled to an 8-1 win over GW's Arya Vayghan and then an 8-6 win over St. John's Gustova Loza to advance to the consolation semifinals. He dropped his semifinals match 6-2, 2-6, (11-9) to Penn's Alex Vasin.

In the "B" singles flight, sophomore Ryan Berman, senior Tom Santoro, senior Josh Lederman, junior Matt Schimmel, and Samaha all won their first round matches. Samaha then advanced to the third round with a second round victory.

In the first round, Samaha defeated opponent Jon Chan of Columbia 6-2, 6-1. Samaha then rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Charlie Brosens of Princeton before losing in the third round 6-3, 6-3 to Dan Urban of Columbia. Berman took care of Princeton's Yohei Shoji 6-3, 6-3 in the first round before dropping his second round match 6-2, 6-2 to Columbia's Haig Schneiderman. Santoro pulled out a 5-7, 7-5, (10-8) win over St. John's Milo Hauk in the first round before dropping his second round match 6-2, 6-3. Likewise, Lederman defeated GW's Alex Sohaili 6-3, 6-2 before dropping his second match 6-1, 6-4 to Michael Bohnen.

Sophomore Jordan Abergel dropped his first match in the "B" singles flight before advancing to the semifinals in the consolation draw. Abergel lost first round 7-6 (3), 6-4 to Columbia's Rajeev Deb Sen. Abergel bounced back to win his two consolation matches 8-4 and 8-6 before dropping the semifinals match 6-3, 6-4.

Freshman Erik Blumenkranz also lost his first round match, but bounced back with an 8-4 win the first round of the consolation before dropping his next consolation match 8-2.

In the "A" doubles flight, Jeff Dawson and Blumenkranz rolled to an 8-4 first round victory before dropping their second round match 8-3. Likewise, Bennett and Connor Dawson won their first round match 8-6 before falling in the second round 8-3.

Caldwell and Samaha won the "B" doubles flight. They pulled out a 9-7 win in the first round of the "B" doubles flight and then cruised to an 8-2 victory in the second round. The duo then recorded their third consecutive victory in the semifinals of the draw with an 8-5 win over GW's Yan Levinski and Chris Kushma. Caldwell and Samaha finished off their run with an 8-5 win in the finals over Jeremy Feldman and Andy Gauthier of Cornell.

The doubles team of Lederman and Abergel and the doubles team of Berman and Santoro did not fare as well in the "B" doubles flight as both teams dropped their first round match.
