NEW YORK, NY - Yale came back from a tough 5-2 loss to Columbia on Saturday to beat Cornell 4-3 on the final day of the ECAC Championships. Brandon Wai and Michael Caldwell won for the third consecutive day, and Yale took two of three doubles matches to finish fifth overall in the tournament.
It wasn't easy for Yale's No. 1 and 2, however, as each player was taken to three sets. Wai got by Josh Raff 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, and Caldwell battled hard after losing the first set to defeat Nick Brunner 5-7, 7-5, 7-5. Matt Schimmel also came through for the Bulldogs in singles, picking up a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Joshua Goldstein.
In doubles, Yale also picked up two very close victories. Josh Lederman and Jeff Dawson won 8-6 over Goldstein and Weston Nichols at No. 2, and Caldwell and Chris Lawler got by Marc Asch and Rory Heggie 8-4 in the No. 3 slot.
