Bulldogs Off To Strong Start At ITAs

PHILADELPHIA, PA. - Men's tennis opened its weekend at the ITA Regional Championships in Philadelphia, PA today with the first rounds of singles and doubles play. The Bulldogs won three of four singles matches, and one of their two doubles matches.

Jeff Dawson started his tournament off strongly, defeating Zach Pasanen of Brown, 7-5, 7-5. Jeff's brother Connor Dawson played an outstanding match against Rory Heggie of Cornell, winning 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Connor was down 5-2 in the third set before rallying to win five straight games, and the match.

"[Connor] really picked up his game a notch," Cary Leeds Head Coach Alex Dorato said.

Matt Schimmel also won his first-round match over Stony Brook's Youssef Fassi-Fehri, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. Joining Schimmel and the Dawson brothers in the second round of singles play will be Brandon Wai and Michael Caldwell, both of whom received first-round byes. Wai is the tournament's No. 1 seed, and Caldwell is seeded No. 17.

Rory Green, who has been battling an injury the entire fall, dropped a tough 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 first-round match to Penn's Eric Riley.

"I was disappointed he lost, but I think at 100% Rory beats this player," Dorato said.

In doubles, Caldwell and Chris Lawler won easily over Columbia's Mark Clemente and Jonathan Wong, 8-4, and Jeff Dawson and Josh Lederman dropped their first-round match to Dan Brous and Rory Heggie of Cornell, 8-5. Wai and Green, the No. 8-seeded doubles team, received a first-round bye in the doubles draw.
