Hanover, NH - The Yale men's tennis team began play today in the 2005 International Tennis Association Northeastern Regional hosted by Dartmouth University. The Bulldogs had an extremely successful first round of play. Brandon Wai '07 and Milosz Gudzowski `06 received byes to the next round. Mike Caldwell '09 and Rowan Reynolds `06 won their matches to advance to the next round of play. In doubles play, both Yale teams advanced to the next round, with Wai and Lederman combining to totally dominate over Holy Cross 8-1.
In singles action, No. 1 seed Wai received a bye and advances to play against No. 3 seed Luke Tedaldi of Brown at 8 am on Sat., Oct. 22. No. 23 seed Gudzowski also received a bye and will play Shrestha Raj of Dartmouth at 11:30 am on Sat. Caldwell slammed Alejandro Nery of St. Bonaventure. Caldwell defeated Nery in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Caldwell will face off against No. 31 Jeff Schechtman of Dartmouth at 9:30 am on Sat. Jeff Dawson `09 played against Mike Crooks of Stonybrook. Crooks won the match 6-2, 6-3. Reynolds battled against Nate Nelms of Navy. After a heated battle, Reynolds emerged the winner, going 6-7(4),6-1, 6-4. Reynolds will play No. 20 Mark Clemente of Columbia at 2:30 pm on Sat.
In the qualifying open men's singles, No. 4 seeded Josh Lederman `09 was defeated by Jean-Francois Robitaille of Stony Brook. Robitaille won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, No. 9 seed Wai and Lederman devastated Brian Kelly and A. Deaver of Holy Cross 8-0. The duo will play Barrett Wolfe and Jared Kobren of Boston University at 4 pm on Sat. No. 5 Reynolds and Green received a bye and will compete against James Michael and Malcolm Scatliffe of Penn State at 4 pm on Sat.
