Hanover, NH - Brandon Wai `07 won the ITA Northeast Regional at Dartmouth College this morning by beating Jason Pinsky of UPenn in the semi-finals and then Mark Barry of Penn State in the finals match. Wai and Barry received automatic bids to the National Indoor Championship at Ohio State, which will be held on Nov. 3-6 in Columbus, OH.
In the semi-final match, No. 1 seed Wai beat No. 3 seed Pinksy in three sets. Wai won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the finals.
In the finals, Wai beat No. 4 seed Barry in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Barry is ranked No. 38 in the country, while Wai is ranked No. 51. Wai was ranked as the top seed at the ITAs, because Wai beat Barry at the ECAC Championships (The ECACs were held on Oct. 1-3, 2005).
Carey Leeds Coach of Men's Tennis Alex Dorato said that after playing Sargis Sargisian last August at the Pilot Pen Tournament in New Haven, Wai knew "that he could play even with the 117th player in the world, and he came [into the ITAs] thinking there is nobody he can't beat here."
"Brandon played his best tennis in the finals... He was just crushing the ball, really getting great racquet speed and just hitting everything big. Definitely the biggest tournament win of his career," Dorato said.
