Men's Track and Field Team Named All-Academic
On Wednesday, the Yale men's track and field team was selected by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as an All-Academic team for the 2010-2011 season. Teams with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 were selected; the Bulldogs had a cumulative average of 3.40. Yale was one of 90 honorees, including six other Ivy League schools.

Two NCAA Regional qualifiers from the Yale men’s track and field team, Matt Bogdan ’11 and John Van Deventer ’11, have been named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Track & Field team for their work in the classroom. The USTFCCCA made the announcement Wednesday.

Jeff Perrella Named Academic All-District
Jeff Perrella, who finished his Yale career this past fall after advancing all the way to the NCAA Cross Country Championship, has been named first team Capital One Academic All-District 1 in men's track & field/cross country. He was one of 11 first-team selections in the university division of District 1, which includes seven U.S. states in the Northeast plus five Canadian provinces.

The Bulldogs ended their stint at the NCAA East Regional on Saturday with senior John Van Deventer competing in his last collegiate race in the 1,500-meter run and sophomore Mike Levine competing in the discus. Without anyone advancing to nationals, the team concluded their outdoor season with a total of four regional performances.

The Bulldogs closed out the second day of NCAA Regional competition with two performances in the quarterfinal of the 3,000-meter steeplechase by senior Matt Bogdan and junior Nathan Richards. ith neither qualifying for the national meet, Bogdan and Richards gave their last race of the season, and for Bogdan, his last race in Yale uniform.

Making sure that his collegiate run was not over yet, senior John Van Deventer clinched a spot in the finals of the 1,500-meter run on the first day of the NCAA East Regional. If all goes well in finals, Van Deventer could be one of 12 runners in the 1,500-meter run who advance to the national championship.

The Bulldogs held their annual banquet on Tuesday to reflect on the season and recognize senior captain Marty Evans and senior John Van Deventer, who made special contributions to the team. By a team vote, junior Matthew Bieszard was also announced as team captain for the 2011-12 season.

Sophomore Mike Levine earned first team All-Ivy Honors after his winning performance in the discus at the Ivy League Heptagonals Championships last weekend, hosted by Yale. Levine Takes Title in Discus at Heptagonals
Day two of Ivy League Heptagonals Championships did not disappoint as the Bulldogs brought out their best performances, highlighted by sophomore Mike Levine’s win in the discus. Four other individuals, as well as all three relay teams, scored. The Bulldogs placed fifth with 44 points. Princeton won the meet with 197 points, breaking Cornell’s eight-year long streak.

Levine Scores for Bulldogs; Two Qualify on Heptagonals Day One
The name of the game was to qualify as the Bulldogs competed to make it to finals on the first day of the 76th Ivy League Heptagonals Championships. Lightning delays at the Cuyler Athletic Complex and Dwyer Track cost over a two-hour delay, which had athletes warming up multiple times for postponed events. After day one, Princeton was the leader with 68 points.

Amidst finals and end-of-the-year events, the Bulldogs will buckle down this weekend for the annual Ivy League Heptagonals Championships. The Bulldogs competed in their final relay at the world-renowned Penn Relays on Saturday. After dominating the open class division of the distance medley relay on Friday with the fifth-fastest time for Yale outdoor, the distance runners came back to race the college division of the 4x800-meter relay.

The distance runners stole the show on Friday night with a streak of school records and personal bests at the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton. With more than 35 teams competing, the meet’s Friday Night Races gave the Bulldogs a chance to compete in a selective field of distance runners who had met the meet standards. The team landed a sweep of personal and season bests in every race they entered in.

The Bulldogs have a busy weekend ahead of them in one of the first large meets of the outdoor season at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton, with more than 35 teams competing. In addition to Princeton, the Bulldogs will have the chance to compete against most of the other Ivy League schools, including Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard and Penn. The two-day invitational also features the Friday Night Races, reserved for distance runners who have met the meet standards. This will be the team’s second time at the Tigers’ Weaver Stadium, which will be the site of outdoor IC4A Championships in post-season.

Bad Weather Not Enough to Dissuade Bulldogs
At Saturday’s Harvard-Yale meet, the Bulldogs had to dig deep as conditions dipped to the 40s and up to 35 mph winds at DeWitt-Cuyler Track. Both teams had an extra incentive, as the top two finishers in each event will travel to England in the summer to compete in the biannual Harvard-Yale-Oxford-Cambridge meet. Despite the Harvard win, the Bulldogs proved their mental toughness with six wins and many other top spots, totaling a score of 57 points.

The seniors’ last meet at Coxe Cage was a memorable one as the Bulldogs posted up one PR after another while fighting for places at the Harvard-Yale-Princeton meet on Saturday. The team placed third with 19 points. Although the Bulldogs did not win the meet, senior captain Marty Evans said they had many runners “leave it all on the track.”

Named after the legendary Yale coach Bob Giegengack, the meet will feature more than 16 schools from the region. Evans Named Athlete of the Week by Hepstrack.com
Senior captain Marty Evans was named male athlete of the week by Hepstrack.com on Sunday. Evans won the 200-meter dash at Saturday’s tri-meet with Dartmouth and Columbia with a blazing time of 21.87, the fastest time in the Ivy League and no. 2 Yale all-time indoor. He also ran a 49.49 in the 400-meter dash, also among top five in the league.

Last year was the only time in six years that the Bulldogs did not win the meet, and they will seek to reclaim the title this year. David Shoehalter Begins Role as Yale’s Mark T. Young ‘68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field
With the start of the track and field season this coming Saturday, David Shoehalter officially takes over the Bulldogs’ program as the Mark T. Young ’68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field. Shoehalter, who has helped build the program in his 16 seasons as a coach at Yale, succeeds legendary Yale coach Mark Young ’68 in the director’s position. In addition to Shoehalter’s promotion, the Bulldogs also promoted assistant coach Marc Davis to head coach of the men’s track and field team.

Mark Young ‘68 to Retire After Cross Country Season
Mark Young ’68, Yale’s Mark T. Young ’68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field, announced on Friday that he will retire from that position at the conclusion of the upcoming cross country season. Young, who is entering his 31st season as a coach at Yale, will remain with the program coaching the women’s track and field team’s distance and middle distance runners through the spring. Associate head coach David Shoehalter will be Yale’s new Mark T. Young ’68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field.
