Distance Medley Relay Takes Second on Heps Day Two
Bulldogs Come in Eighth Place
NEW YORK – The Bulldogs capped off their indoor season with some of the best performances of the year on the second day of Heptagonals Championships, making season bests in seven out of the eight events they competed in on Sunday. The team placed eighth with 25 points.
To start off the day, sophomore Tommy Winger jumped a PR of 13.46m in the triple jump, the farthest that any Bulldog has jumped this season. Senior David Smith also threw a season best of 14.97m in the shot put.
After running an impressive PR yesterday, senior captain Marty Evans came back on Sunday with another personal best of 48.06 in the 400-meter dash to place third. Junior Matthew Bieszard also scored for the Bulldogs in the 500-meter dash, clocking in 1:03.84 in sixth place.
The distance medley relay had a phenomenal run, the team of senior John Van Deventer, junior Julian Sheinbaum, sophomore Christopher Ramsey and freshman James Shirvell edging Harvard's team by less than three-tenths of a second to take second with a season best of 9:50.44. The time also marks No. 7 for all-time Yale indoor and No. 4 in the history of league championships. The Bulldogs ran in a lead pack with Harvard and Princeton before passing the Tigers towards the end of the race, which also earned them second team all-Ivy honors. Shirvell also earned second team all-Ivy honors in the 1,000-meter run, placing second with a PR of 2:23.85 and setting No. 5 all-time league championship. The 4x800 meter relay team also ran a season best of 7:48.39, fielded by senior Matt Bogdan, junior Charlie Jaeger and sophomores Michael Pierce and Timothy Hillas. Junior Samuel Lynch also finished the 5,000-meter run in 14:56.19.
The Tigers took home the title with 215 points, followed by Cornell with 172 points.
The indoor season for most of the Bulldogs is over, but those who have met the IC4A-qualifying standards will compete at the IC4A Championships in Boston next weekend.
