Evans Wins 200-Meter Dash, 4x100 Meter Relay Takes Second

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bulldogs continued their impressive run on the second day of the Sam Howell Invitational, including a win in the 200-meter dash by senior captain Marty Evans and a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. After fighting through the winter-like weather on Friday night, the sun on Saturday was a welcome change for competition, especially against other Ivy League schools for the first time in outdoor season.

Evans notched his second consecutive win the 200-meter dash, defeating Tom Hopkins of Princeton in 21.63. Junior Matthew Bieszard, competing in the same heat, followed up with third-place finish in 21.79, also beating Princeton's Sebastian Steffen.

The distance runners were represented well in Saturday's section of the 1,500-meter run with senior Itse Begho leading the Bulldogs in 10th place overall (4:03.51) and freshmen Miles Richardson and Michael Pierce finishing in 12th (4:03.81) and 13th (4:04.26) respectively. Freshman James Shirvell was boxed in the 800-meter run at the start, but broke out in the second lap to make a run for first, placing eighth in 1:55.37 ahead of Columbia's three runners. Shirvell was followed by juniors Julian Sheinbaum in 15th place (1:56.66) and Charlie Jaeger in 20th place (1:57.64).

The Bulldogs went 8-10-11 in the 100-meter dash with senior Nathan Molina (11.39) tying for eighth and freshmen Daniel Jones (11.44) and Dana Lindberg (11.49). The Bulldogs took second in 4x100-meter relay for the second year in a row with the team of Evans, Molina, senior Chris Stanley and Bieszard in a season best of 42.16, edging Princeton's team and qualifying for IC4As. Jones, with a specialty in the short sprints, gave the Bulldogs a strong start before handing it off to Evans, who placed them in first during the second leg and Lindberg and Molina held on for second.

On the field, senior David Smith threw a huge season best in the shot put (15.21m) to place fourth, along with a sixth-place finish in the discus (43.31m). Sophomore Mike Levine also placed 12th in the hammer throw with a throw of 49.95m. Senior Samba Binagi also started off his season with a fifth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 13.08m.

The Bulldog' next competition will be closer to home at the UConn Husky Spring Invitational on April 9.
