Bulldogs Head to UConn for Husky Invitational
Meet Precursor to Harvard-Yale
NEW HAVEN. Conn. – Nearing the halfway point of the season, the Bulldogs will compete at the nearby UConn Husky Invitational this weekend before hosting the annual Harvard-Yale meet on April 16. After several impressive performances at Princeton last weekend, the Bulldogs are buckling down for the latter part of outdoor season.
"This week gives us our last chance to sharpen up for the Yale-Harvard meet on the 16th. We're resting a number of our top distance runners, but those who are competing are using the meet as an opportunity to get in the proper competitive mind frame for the big meets to come," said David Shoehalter, the Mark T. Young '68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field.
Senior captain Marty Evans and junior Matthew Bieszard put on some of the strongest performances last Saturday and currently hold the first and third-fastest times, respectively, in the Ivy League for the 200-meter dash. The 4x100 meter relay team is also coming off a second-place finish, while the 4x400 meter relay team has already notched a win this season. Senior Nathan Molina and freshman Daniel Jones, who were part of the 4x100 meter relay team last weekend, should also contribute in the short sprints
"Evans and Bieszard continue to have great early seasons. I'd expect to see some great performances from the steeplers and our middle distance and distance group as they begin to round into shape for outdoors," Shoehalter said.
The 3,000-meter steeplechase brings several competitive runners, including junior Nathan Richards, who proved his mental toughness as he ran through winter-like weather in the steeplechase last week. Richards and senior Matt Bogdan are 3-4 in the league in the steeplechase, while freshman Michael Cunetta already has a win in the event. In the 1,500-meter run, junior Julian Sheinbaum brings in the fastest time for the Bulldogs, with senior Itse Begho and freshman Miles Richardson also having ran strong races this season. Freshman James Shirvell clocked in 1:55.37 in the 800-meter run last weekend after an impressive indoor season, as well as sophomore Michael Pierce, who had an impressive debut in the 800-meter run at the season opener.
Senior David Smith is on momentum after his season best in the shot put at Princeton, as well as sophomore Mike Levine with a win in the discus under his belt from the season opener. Senior Samba Binagi also had a decent start in the triple jump last weekend after not competing during the latter half of indoor season. Sophomore Tommy Winger could also contribute in the triple jump in addition to his usual event, the long jump.
The meet will kick off with the hammer throw at 10 a.m. and end with the 4x400-meter relay at 1:45 p.m. A complete schedule can be found here. Results will be posted on UConnHuskies.com and Yalebulldogs.com after the meet.
