Numerous Athletes Make PRs, Top Performances
STORRS, Conn. – The Bulldogs brought a smaller contingency to the UConn Husky Invitational on Saturday, but ended the day with numerous personal bests across the board. The strong performances throughout the day bode a positive outlook going into the highly anticipated Harvard-Yale meet next weekend.
The throwers had an exceptional day, with sophomore Mike Levine breaking the 50-meter mark in the discus for the first time this season with a huge PR (52.02m) to place fourth. Levine also had his second-best throw of the season in the hammer throw (51.02m), while senior David Smith continued his streak of personal bests with a PR of over 10 feet (46.45m). Smith also put on another solid performance in the shot put with a throw of 14.74m to place seventh, along with freshman Stefan Palios in ninth (14.01m).
The seniors had an impressive combined effort in the sprints. A regular contributor to the 4x100 meter relay team, senior captain Marty Evans tested his speed in the individual 100-meter dash for the first time in outdoor season and clocked in a blazing time of 10.91 to place fifth, matching the fastest time for the Bulldogs this season by junior Matthew Bieszard. Seniors Nathan Molina and Chris Stanley also placed 10th (11.14) and 12th (11.26), respectively. Stanley also finished first for the Bulldogs in the 200-meter dash to place a strong eighth (22.51), followed by Lindberg in 12th place with a season best (22.82).
The majority of the distance squad did not compete in order to rest up for next week's Harvard-Yale meet, but those who did made up for the lack in number. In the 1500-meter run, sophomore Michael Pierce ran almost a 10-second PR to place eighth, posting the fastest time in the event for the Bulldogs this season so far, 3:55.57, which is only four seconds off the IC4A-qualifying standard. Right behind Pierce, sophomore Conor Dooney opened his outdoor season with an encouraging time of 3.56.43 in ninth place, followed closely by senior Itse Begho in 11th with a PR and his first sub four-minute time this season (3:58.52), junior Sam Kirtner in 12th (4:00.42), freshman Miles Richardson in 14th with a PR (4:02.12) and senior James Wyper also with a PR (4:06.81).
The Bulldogs had solid races in both relays, placing third in the 4x100-meter relay and fourth in the 4x400-meter relay. The 4x100-meter relay team of Evans, Stanley, Bieszard and Jones ran 42.41, another IC4A-qualifying time for them this season, while Evans, Stanley and Jones came back to team up with Molina in the 4x400-meter relay and run 3:20.75.
After an impressive team effort at the UConn meet, the Bulldogs will gear up for Harvard-Yale at home on April 16.
