Steeplechasers Hit the Track on Second Day of NCAA Regional
Bogdan, Richards Compete in Final Race of Season
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Bulldogs closed out the second day of NCAA Regional competition with two performances in the quarterfinal of the 3,000-meter steeplechase by senior Matt Bogdan and junior Nathan Richards. With neither athlete qualifying for the national meet, Bogdan and Richards gave their last race of the season, and for Bogdan, his last race in Yale uniform.
The weather brought an unexpected bout of chilly temperatures to the final event of the night. Competing in separate heats, Bogdan and Richards finished in 35th place (9:09.79) and 44th place (9:23.92), respectively. The top three in three heats and the next four fastest times advanced to the national championship with Louisville senior Matt Hughes taking the top spot in 8:35.74.
Bogdan ends a decorated collegiate career in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as a two-time NCAA regional qualifier and two-time scorer at outdoor Ivy League Heptagonals. Richards, also a two-time scorer at Heptagonals, has a promising outlook for next year after his debut at the regional meet this season.
In the final day of competition on Saturday, two Bulldogs will have a chance to qualify for the national meet, sophomore Mike Levine in the discus at 5:00 p.m. and senior John Van Deventer in the 1,500-meter run finals at 6:45 p.m. Heat sheets and live results are available at IUHoosiers.com. A complete schedule of the meet as well as live results and video coverage can be found at the meet website. Results will be posted at Yalebulldogs.com after the meet.
